課程概述

1. Semantics
Lexical semantics (reference, sense, synonyms, antonyms, polysemy, homophony, homonyms, heteronyms); compositional semantics; Semantic relations involving sentences (paraphrase, entailment, contradiction); when compositionality goes awry (anomaly, metaphor, idioms)

2. Pragmatics
Pronouns and other deictic words; Implicature; Presupposition; Speech acts

3. Language in society
Language Use and variation (dialects, styles, slang, taboos, language and sexism);
Language contact (lingua francas, pidgins and creoles, societal multilingualism)

4. Language acquisition
Theories of language acquisition; Stages in 1st language acquisition; The acquisition of morphology, syntax, and word meaning; 2nd language acquisition; Native language influence in L2 acquisition

5. Historical linguistics
Why do languages change; Lexical change (borrowings or loan words, semantic change); Morphological change; syntactic change; Phonological change; Extinct and endangered languages; Reconstructing dead languages.

6. Language typology and Writing systems
The genetic classification of languages; types of languages; Types of writing systems; The history of writing systems.

7. Practical Applications
What do you do with linguistics?
Language education; Speech therapy; Speech and hearing science; Communications (interpersonal & Public); Language in advertising; Translation studies; Literary criticism; Rhetoric; Politics (language policy, language in politics); Law (contract language); Philosophy.  

課程目標
This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the scientific study of language. The content of the Spring semester will cover traditional analysis of language data, including semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and historical linguistics.

Throughout this one-year course, students will explore human language from different aspects and hopefully their interests in linguistics will be kindled.
